Thanks.

There are lots of data sets to look at. The sub-meter from Bear Creek of
the whole trail looks very interesting. I'll start there.

I've obviously sent an email to J. Ley for his 2012 maps. It should be
Interesting.

There are several sets of data that is/are floating around in the
webosphere.

First is a really in-depth looking set of alignment tracks that are based
off a "dated" Google Earth file of a now "dated" J. Ley alignment. These
tracks are DATED and have many changes to the current track. I think this
version does not show the Crazy Cook alignment at all for instance. But a
lot of it is still good.

Second is the Out of Order "OOO" track alignment that is pretty darn good
and follows a more current version of the J. Ley alignment(s) and also
several of the alternatives. This was as of last year the Gold Standard.
But with each year, it is getting dated.

Third is the NEW Jerry Brown (Bear Creek)alignment that is based off of the
"Official" CDTA alignment.

This data is very, very, very accurate for that alignment. It looks like
the entire trail following the ONE alignment should be available this year.
You can't get better data than this and it is all based on field collection.
The only thing to keep in mind is that this is the official recognized trail
and many, many alternatives are out there. But, WOW, what great work that
Jerry and crew has done!!

Other sources that I have available for downloading is a shotgun of various
waypoints of various alignments taken in the field. Some are accurate,
others are dated. You have to filter out the dated and recognize that
alternates and new alignments can happen over time.

There is also a J. Ley compass rose set of waypoints that can be used as a
stand alone location technique as explained on the J. Ley site. ( I will
check these compass rose points again as the 2012 maps are released)

I have a download web site at:

https://sites.google.com/site/frankgilliland/

that has all of the above links and downloadable .gpx files of the above
mentioned files.

If anyone has any other files of data (or any error corrections) please send
them to me at:

frankgilliland at gmail dot com

Remember that all of this GPS data is only as good as the brain that is
interpreting them. AND please

PRINT AND TAKE THE J. LEY MAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GPS is a back-up.

Good luck and Happy Hiking

(and what Peanut Eater said...)

I'm not familiar with the waypoints you cited, but I used a combination of
Jerry Brown's waypoints (the "official" CDTA route) and a track file from
Out of Order. OOO's file had all of the Ley alternate routes and for the
most part was pretty accurate even though he generated them on a computer
from the Ley maps (as opposed to walking the trail to create the track). My
gps could display both OOO's track and Jerry's waypoints on the screen at
the same time, so it was easy to see the alternate routes.
